Ed Spankie :

An exceptionally young 50 year old, married with 3 active daughters, living in Manorbier, Pembrokeshire since 1989. Managing Director of Consort Equipment Products in Milford Haven.

Only took up cycling 2 years ago to take advantage of sights and scenery of beautiful West Wales. As usual the challenge of going one step further took over and have so far completed the London to Paris Cycle Ride for the British Legion and the Coast to Coast ride (Whitehaven to Tynemouth)

Inspiration for the Lands End to John o’Groats ride came from an Uncle who completed the ride a few years ago at age 70! So I decided that I would not leave it that long.

MacMillan is an important Charity to me as I have known many people who have benefited from their excellent care.

Our aim is to complete the ride for our own satisfaction but with the added challenge of raising monies to help fund six new MacMillan Cancer Specialists here in South and West Wales.

Richard Harrison:

Married, and I can boast of having 2 fantastic Grandchildren (who think I am completely mad!) Linzi my wife has plenty of practice in coping with me as she is an Assistant Headmistress at an Infant School! Born in Birmingham, came to Tenby in 1972 and don’t want to leave. Occupy myself in a job that is tailored made for me within the Marshall Group – selling to the Seaside Leisure Industry along the holiday coasts from Cardigan to Cardiff!

Life is a challenge and I have lost members of my family to Cancer including both my Mother and Mother in Law, so I appreciate the value of the MacMillan Nurses.
It was on a Cancer Charity Swim from Tenby to Caldey, that led to this Cycle Ride.
The one way swim led to another in the opposite direction, then both directions without stopping. A reporter then asked me “What Next” and suggested I ought to do a Charity Marathon in London. It seemed a good idea at the time and finally when I staggered into the Mall, I dropped my“Good Luck” charm, two photos of my Mother and Mother in Law which had kept me going - ,I nearly got trampled to death trying to pick them up! Next came Dublin, then Paris and 16 Marathons later I got under the 3 hour barrier. This led to Triathlons but I was losing time on the Cycle Leg – so extra training!. Through the extra training I became completely addicted to cycling and “LeJog” is the result.

This challenge is to complete the ride within the time and to raise as much money as possible for the MacMillan cause in South and West Wales. And yes – the photos will still be there with me.

Ray Harrison :

A recently retired 73 year old and father of Richard.
Richard, always the Salesman, was concerned that I would be bored now that I had retired and thought that it would be a nice holiday for me to drive the Support Van all the way from Lands End to John o ‘Groats, all I would have to do would be to get in front, find a nice place to make the “Tea”, prepare the Elevenses, Lunch and Tea, do the washing, etc. etc. etc. I hope that I can keep up with the pair of them. (Although I am a bit concerned with the enthusiasm shown by my wife Joan at the thought of getting rid of me!)

Having been involved with Lions International Charity Fund Raising for many years, I was only too pleased to Volunteer in this worthy cause, MacMillan Nurses have a special meaning having lost my late wife Edna with Cancer in 1986.
